EAT LOCAL ONE YEAR was founded by local chiropractor, Kristofer Young and his wife, Joanne, a massage therapist. In late 2007, three friends, independently, told the Youngs about Barbara Kingsolver’s book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle”. The theme of the book was the Kingsolver family living for an entire year, eating, almost entirely, local food.
The Youngs couldn’t resist. They thought; it is cool that the Kingsolvers did it, it would be cool if we did it, and it would be megacool if we organized a locavore project and ate locally with a core group of 100 people. By March 1, 2008 the Youngs had committed to creating the project, and the planning began. As they put the word out, media exposure began; newspapers, radio and TV.
The first introductory meeting was held on May 10, 2008 at the Young’s home. Forty interested and excited people showed up. At least forty more had RSVP’s saying that they were disappointed that they would not be able to be with us.
On April 30, 2008, Kris and Joanne were interviewed about EAT LOCAL ONE YEAR by Jim Rondeau on radio station KCLU’s “CrossTalk”.
