Hello All Eat-Local-One-Year Forum Members!
We hope that 2009 and your involvement with local food has been good for you!
As this year winds down, we have created a new project for 2010. We call it Locavore Lite, and it can be done by just about everyone. Please take a look below at how do-able it is, consider participating, and consider helping us get thousands of people to join us in this simple but powerful exercise.
We will post info on Locavore Lite here at Eat Local One Year, so you will be in the loop. If you are a Facebook user, please share it there.
Locavore Lite 2010 is a fresh, fun, healthy, Ventura County-based, local-food project which welcomes participants from our County and from around the world. The project is designed to increase public awareness of the importance and availability of local farm produce, by encouraging residents to involve themselves in their local food system. A major objective of the project is to reduce global warning.
A locavore is a person who eats food that is grown or raised locally. The term Locavore Lite suggests a form of local eating that is so easy, that anyone can do it.
If you have an interest in delicious food, health, farming, the environment, the local economy, quality of life,
climate change, or food safety; then you will want to participate with your friends and family in Locavore Lite 2010.
Official Ground Rules for Participation in Locavore Lite 20101) commit to this year-long project for which participation begins on January 1, 2010, or at the latest by
April 1, 2010, and ends on January 1, 2011,
2) give some consideration to where your non-local foods come from,
3) shop at a farmers’ market a minimum of one time per month, or receive produce from a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) at least once a month – if it is not possible to shop at a farmers’ market or receive produce from a CSA each calendar month of the year, then the participant will shop at a farmers’ market or receive CSA produce a minimum of 12 times within the calendar year,

Locavore Lite is an outgrowth of the Ventura County-based 2009 local-food project, Eat Local One Year (
www.EatLocalOneYear.com ). While Eat Local One Year was designed to explore a hardcore form of local eating (food from within 100 miles) for an entire year, Locavore Lite is designed to be easy to do, while still being of great benefit to the local environment, economy, and communities. When Eat Local One Year was launched on January 1, 2009, only 21 individuals had been found in Ventura County who felt that they could commit to the strict form of local eating that the program called for. Locavore Lite can be done by virtually anyone.
Please help us spread the word; tell your Facebook friends, e-mail everyone, write letters to the editor of your newspaper, and share the idea with everyone you know.
To our collective health,
Kristofer and Joanne Young
Co-founders Locavore Lite 2010 & Eat Local One Year
Ground Rule Explanations1) a parent may make the commitment for participation for a minor,
2) all-local-food meals can be easily accomplished by participating in an all-local-food potluck, or purchasing an all-local-food meal at a restaurant such as Main Course California -
http://www.maincoursecalifornia.com 3) if an individual is not able to sign up to participate at the beginning of 2010, and if she/he is unable to
shop at a farmers’ market or receive a CSA order in any of the first 3 months of the year, she he may make up the missed month in a subsequent month – the total trips to a farmers’ market or CSA orders received must be at least 12 for the calendar year.
